It was the driver’s way of settling the dispute. It was a horrific act,” said Deputy Police Chief Charlie Beck. Blanche, 22, was four to five months pregnant and had learned only last week that she was expecting a girl, said her stepmother, Diane Williams. “They called me and told me my baby was laying in the streets,” said Williams, who rushed from her home in Las Vegas to Los Angeles after authorities told her of her stepdaughter’s death. She said Blanche had returned from New Orleans about three hours before she was killed. She had gone there to attend her grandfather’s funeral, Williams said. “She was a wonderful, wonderful person, a wonderful child,” Williams said. A pregnant woman who had just returned from her grandfather’s funeral was killed when another woman deliberately rammed her car into a crowd during a street brawl involving about three dozen young women, police said Tuesday. Shontae Treniece Blanche of Los Angeles, was killed and two other women were injured in a confrontation stemming from a love triangle between the car driver and another woman, said Officer Matthew Gares. One of the injured, whose names were not released, was in critical condition but it appears doctors were able to save her badly injured leg, he said. The driver of the car, Unique Bishop, 21, fled after Monday afternoon’s fight but later turned herself in to authorities and was booked for investigation of murder, police said. She was being held in lieu of $1 million bail. Police planned to forward the case to prosecutors Wednesday and recommend that Bishop be charged with murder and attempted murder. The fight started about 2:30 p.m. Monday in South Los Angeles. Two women fighting over the same man met at a gas station to settle the dispute, Gares said. “The girls said they were supposed to show up and talk about it, it wasn’t supposed to escalate into this physical, violent situation,” Gares said. At one point, as many as 30 women were involved in an ensuing fight, with some possibly trying to break it up. After the fighting, four women including Blanche and a woman involved in the love triangle dispute with Bishop began walking away. Bishop became “upset” and got behind the wheel of a 1999 Chrysler belonging to someone else and drove it into the group of four, Gares said. One of the victims was pinned against another car and it appears Blanche was dragged by the vehicle, police said. By late afternoon about two dozen family members and friends gathered around a makeshift shrine of balloons, flowers, candles and cards at the site where Blanche was killed. A woman who identified herself as Blanche’s aunt said relatives were shocked she had somehow gotten caught up in the violence. “She was always good, that’s why we don’t understand this. She was good,” said the woman who would only give her first name, Jasmine.160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
