Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher has slammed the appeals process set up by An Post regarding the closure of post offices as “a waste of effort and time.”Deputy Gallagher raised the issue in the Dail last night. It comes as ALL post offices earmarked for closure in Donegal had their appeals rejected to date. The Fianna Fail TD said he was extremely disappointed that the Minister for Communications Richard Bruton failed to turn up for the debate, instead deputising Minister of State Sean Canney to attend. He said this is a further indictment of just how serious the Government are really treating this issue and a demonstration of just how genuine their approach rural Ireland is.He fumed “The entire appeals process was deceitful from the outset; it was a cynical exercise endorsed by the Government to tick a box whereby an impression of an appeals mechanism was given by An Post. But, the appeals process thus far has recorded a 100% rejection rate of appeals lodged in Donegal stated Pat the Cope.“Hundreds if not thousands of people across the various communities affected by Post Office closures attended public meetings in an effort to maintain their Post Offices but this was an empty formula and a complete non process – a waste of effort and time. Trojan efforts were made to save Post Offices by these communities but to no avail,” added Pat the Cope. The Minister of State Canney in his reply state it was the decision of An Post to close the various post offices based on the package scheme which was agreed with the Union and made available to all Post Masters or Mistresses.Pat the Cope added during the debate that no rural proofing of the Post Office closures policy was undertaken by the Government and there was a complete failure to defend rural based services.“I am extremely critical of the appeals process which was set up to adjudicate on the appeals which were lodged by the various communities – it was nothing short of misleading and created a false expectation in the eyes of the general public.“I am calling on the Minister to meet with a cross-party delegation to discuss the ongoing closures of Post Offices – and to give this issue the serious consideration that it deserves. It is not right that different criteria apply to urban areas as does to rural areas.“In cities, you can live 2 km from a post office but in rural areas the distance is set at 15 km, despite urban areas having excellent public transport and rural areas having very limited access to public transport stated Pat the Cope. “Numerous communities have been left badly scarred by this process, as thousands of submissions have been sent into An Post – the Government need to start listening to the concerns of rural Ireland and the respective communities and take the necessary action to support our struggling rural communities.“The long term effect of this policy will have lasting negative impacts on our towns and villages throughout Donegal and elsewhere in rural Ireland.”An Post slammed as 100% of Donegal closure appeals rejected was last modified: November 23rd, 2018 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:An PostAppealsdonegalpost offices

A United Boeing 747-400. Photo: United Airlines The last US airlines operating the passenger version of the Boeing 747 are in the process of saying goodbye to the “Queen of the Skies” with United Airlines’ last flight scheduled for November 7.Delta Air Lines and United are moving to retire the iconic US-made jumbo jet after almost four decades in service.United’s farewell 747 flight will be from San Francisco to Honolulu and its last international 747 flight will head to Seoul, Korea, from San Francisco on October 29.Delta will retire its fleet by the end of 2017 to replace them with Airbus A350s made by Boeing rival Airbus. Delta will take delivery of five A350s in 2017 with more coming in 2018.Delta customers and employees have started their farewells to the big plane after the aircraft operated its final Tokyo-Narita to Honolulu flight and made a rare appearance on two domestic legs earlier this month.United’s final flight will recreate the airline’s first 747 flight in 1970 with a seventies-inspire menu, retro uniforms and inflight entertainment “befitting of that first flight”. It will be named “Friend Ship” after the first United aircraft.Seats on the flight went on sale through united.com September 18 but will not include those on the upper deck, giving all passengers the opportunity to enjoy a space once used for spacious bars and lounges. However, customers in first and business class will go into a draw to occupy a select number of upper-deck seats.United will begin the final journey at 9am San Francisco time with a gate celebration featuring speeches, a Boeing 747 gallery and remarks from United employees and executives. The flight is due to depart at 11am and arrive in Honolulu 2.45pm local time to more farewell celebrations. The 747 OPENED UP AIR TRAVEL FOR MILLIONSThe 747 was the first widebody to sell 1500 units and was instrumental in making air travel more affordable for millions of travellers by allowing airlines to fly more people for less cost. But giving life to the plane that changed the world was a challenge that brought Boeing, the world’s biggest aerospace company, the then-biggest engine maker Pratt and Whitney and the legendary Pan American World Airways to their knees.Boeing was immersed in an attempt to build an ill-fated supersonic transport, dubbed the Boeing 2707, and the 747 was considered an interim solution that might carry passengers for five to 10 years until supersonic transports took over.It was the combined dream of Pan Am founder Bill Trippe and Boeing chief Bill Allen that brought the plane to fruition.Read about Joe Sutter, the father of the 747.Boeing announced plans to build a 490-seat plane in April, 1966, at a new plant in Everett, Washington. The first Boeing 747-100, City of Everett, rolled out of the plant on September 30, 1968, and made its first flight the following February. The first Boeing 747-100, the City of Everett. Pan Am operated the first commercial flight from New York to London on January 21, 1970, and Continental Airlines put it on domestic routes in June that year.United received its first 747-100 on June 26 and made the first San Francisco-Honolulu commercial flight on July 23.In 1985, United announced plans to acquire Pan Am’s Pacific routes as well as 11 Boeing 747SP planes. The 747SPs, regarded as sports cars of the range, were shorter and could fly higher, faster, and farther than standard 747 models. In January, 1988 Friendship One, a Boeing 747SP owned by United Airlines, set the around-the-world air speed record of 36 hours, 54 minutes, and 15 seconds in a children’s charity flight. Passengers on the flight included astronaut Neil Armstrong, famed test pilots Bob Hoover and Lieutenant General Laurence C. Craigie, and Moya Lear, the widow of Lear Jet founder Bill Lear, as guests.United received its first longer-range B747-400 in June, 1989.The big jet has also been used by NASA as a carrier vehicle for the space shuttle and as a platform for an infrared telescope. The first of two specially modified B747-200Bs was delivered in August, 1990, to take over the role of Air Force One from the Boeing 707.Boeing has continued to produce a new, more fuel-efficient iteration of the 747, the 747-8, in both passenger and freighter versions. But it last year hinted it may end production if it failed to receive more orders for the program.A Boeing 747-8 on the production line in Everett in 2016. In my last insight into the Intel IT Business Review I am looking at the impact of one of the BIGGEST trends in business IT, Big Data or as I prefer to use, Analytics. In an age when organizations such as Intel are rich in data, finding value in this data lies in the ability to analyze it and derive actionable business intelligence (BI). Intel IT continues to invest in tools that can transform data into insights to solve high-value business problems. We have seen significant BI results from our investments in a number of areas. For example, Intel IT have developed a recommendation engine to help Intel sales teams strategically focus their sales efforts to deliver greater revenue. This engine uses predictive algorithms and real-time data analysis to prioritize sales engagements with resellers that show the greatest potential for high-volume sales. We saw USD 76.2 million in revenue uplift for 2014 through the use of this capability.Integrating multiple data sources has enabled Intel to use its decision support system to significantly impact revenue and margins by optimizing supply, demand, and pricing decisions. This work resulted in revenue optimization of USD 264 million for 2014.And the big data platform for web analytics is yielding insights that enable more focused and effective marketing campaigns, which, in turn, increase customer engagement and sales. The exploration and implementation of Assembly Test Manufacturing (ATM) cost reduction initiatives involve complex algorithms and strong computation capabilities due to the high volume and velocity of data that must be processed quickly. The ATM data sets–containing up to billions of rows–cannot be effectively processed with traditional SQL platforms. To address this gap, IT have implemented a reusable big data analytics correlation engine. This tool will support various high-value projects. The estimated value for the first of these projects, a pilot project for one of Intel’s future processors, is greater than USD 13 million.Intel IT are exploring additional use cases for data collection and analytics across Intel’s manufacturing, supply chain, marketing, and other operations to improve Intel’s operational efficiency, market reach, and business results. In 2014 alone, Intel IT’s use of BI and analytics tools increased Intel revenue by USD 351 million. To read the Intel IT Business Review in full go to www.intel.com/ITAnnualReport
Kolkata, Jan 26 (PTI) BCCI Committee of Administrators (COA) chief Vinod Rai today backed under-fire Virat Kohli, saying there is nothing wrong in giving the India skipper a free hand in selection matters.Kohli was criticised for his bold selection decisions in the ongoing Test series against South Africa with former batsman Virender Sehwag saying there is no one in the dressing room to point out Kohlis mistakes. However, Rai said theres nothing wrong in giving Kohli a “free hand”.”He has motivated the players. Hes very aggressive and systematic on the field. Hes doing an excellent job,” Rai told PTI.”A captain should be given a free hand in the matter (of team selection). You cant have a captain being controlled from outside. I think hes given a total free hand and hes been able to mould an excellent team.”The International Cricket Council (ICC) is pushing for an Olympic return of the sport, probably with the T20 version, in the 2024 edition. But the ICCs hopes hinge on India as without the BCCI approval, the crickets international body cant dare to make the bid.Rai said: “Its still under consideration. We will see. It depends a lot on the cricket loving population of the country. Whats the kind of cricket they want. It will take place slowly.”Rai also urged former greats like Sachin Tendulkar and Kapil Dev to get into cricket administration.”I think its high time that cricketers come into administration too. The pain of playing was demonstrated this year and Sourav will agree,” he said while speaking at a session on cricketers at the Tata Steel Kolkata Literary Meet.advertisement”The Lodha Committee has done a very good thing. They have said that one of the members in the BCCI has to be an ex-cricketer. Ive been feeling for a long time that people like Sourav, Sachin and Kapil whom Ive personally requested come into cricket in a big way.”They are the people who have come up the hard way. They learnt at every level what it means to be playing cricket. Cricket administration must at least some sprinkling of former cricketers in it to make the game much better in terms of quality.”On the upcoming IPL, he said they are trying their best to maintain the sanctity of the sport as theres an “emotional connect”.”The number of people who follow the sport passionately are Indians all over the place. We would very much like to ensure their interest and trust and the way forward for them is preserved for this country.”He said they would like to nurture the team in a way that they deliver the 2019 World Cup.”The fact the best in the world today is nurtured cherished and provided for so that they can actually be able to deliver the World Cup for the country,” he concluded. So I did the same play, but I did it well.”OSU jumped out to its early lead thanks to two quick goals from freshman forward Annabel Sams.Sams crossed in front of the net a little more than seven minutes into the game and scored on a pass from Johnson for her first career goal.A minute later, Sams was on the board again off an assist from her fellow freshman, Humphrey.“We started out so quick,” Sams said. “We found each other. We found passes like with my first two goals.”OSU coach Anne Wilkinson said she was proud of her team’s effort. She moved Sams from her normal forward position to the midfield Sunday in order to utilize her athleticism, and said was very pleased.“We were able to create more space for her there,” Wilkinson said. “She’s good at coming from behind and attacking.”Wilkinson said she was happy to see her freshman making contributions to the team in such a big way.“It’s exciting,” Wilkinson said. “I’ve been watching them play for a few years now at a different level, but it’s nice to finally get them on the field (for OSU) and competing.”The Buckeyes lost a closely contested matchup with the Ohio Bobcats Friday before their recovery against the Cardinals. The defenses were on display with both teams combining for four shots in the first half. The game picked up a little in the second frame, but the Buckeyes were unable to capitalize despite outshooting the Bobcats, 10-6.The game’s lone goal came off a rebound shot from Ohio freshman Megan Silveira with 18:55 remaining in the game. Enrollment in special education programs is surging in Texas after a policy that directed school districts to limit such services was removed. More than 477,000 students received special education services in the 2016-17 school year, the Houston Chronicle reports. That’s an increase of about 14,000 students from the previous school year.Almost 9 percent of Texas students use special education resources, according to data from Texas’ Public Education Information Management System. For reference, about 13 percent of students received special education services nationwide in 2016, according to The Associated Press. The Texas Education Agency enacted a policy in 2004 to limit special education services to no more than 8.5 percent of students. The agency removed that policy last year after the Chronicle’s investigation found that thousands of students with disabilities didn’t have access to services.Texas passed legislation in the spring that prohibits the creation of a target number of students who can enroll in special education.
