Report: Paid Video Download Is A ‘Dead End’

Read/WriteWeb reported yesterday that CBS is increasingly releasing content for free or via ad-supported mediums such as, Joost. Further, consumers are confronted with a growing number of video-on-demand options from their cable or satellite providers and Internet services.Though sales of television and film downloads via services like iTunes and Amazon Unbox will nearly triple this year, according to the report, it is unlikely that such services will see much growth in 2008 and beyond unless the market shifts dramatically.“The paid download market … is ultimately a dead end,” writes James L. McQuiveny, saying that media producers will need to create new ad-supported business models to survive. The good news for media executives, says the report, is that today’s video downloaders tend to be younger and have higher incomes than the general online population. They’re more tech-savvy and will pump more money into online video this year. However, attracting users outside of those early adopters will be hard without a change in business model and delivery method.Are paid download services like iTunes a dying breed?Tempted by better audience measurment and complete control over advertising content, Forrester predicts that media distributors will shift to ad-supported streams, or even downloads. The Adobe Media Player, for example, will allow content producers to offer downloadable Flash video with embedded ads that can be updated and measured accurately.According to the report only 24% of the general Internet population owns a DVR, while 50% of the current video downloaders own one. That mainstream audience, who are not used to time-shifted, sans-advertising television, will likely be less resistant to ad-supported online media. However, notes the report, mainstream viewers “won‚Äôt appreciate the value of a download until it can be viewed on the TV screen. Yet only 20% of households, none of them mainstream, are interested in buying a special device to do the trick, and only 4% want to spend more than $100 to do it.”That seems to spell good news for cable and satellite companies that can push video-on-demand services direct to a viewer’s television, without forcing them to buy extra equipment, and for set-top boxes like the Xbox 360 (which Microsoft says will have IPTV capability by year’s end), Tivo (which already integrates with Amazon’s Unbox service), and Apple TV (which Forrester predicts predicts will become a broadband service provider by its second iteration).It seems like common sense that free video would win out over pay-to-download in the end, as long as quality is kept high and advertising intrusions are kept to a minimum. But will users really opt for ad-supported streaming video over to save money on ad-free downloadable content? Are the iTunes video store, Amazon Unbox, et. al. part of a dying breed? Nexus Graphs Your Facebook Friends and More

first_imgLooking to visualize your Facebook friend graph? You can with a Facebook app called Nexus. This app is a friend grapher that displays a visual analysis of your Facebook connections. But it’s not just a pretty picture: in addition to viewing how your friends are connected, you can use Nexus to discover what interests your friends share and which of your friends are the most similar to you.How To Use NexusTo get started with Nexus, add the app to your Facebook profile. You can choose to generate the graph in either a light theme or a dark theme, as you wish. Once the graph has been generated, you can hover any node to view your friend connections. What’s really interesting, though, is that you can click on any node on the graph and view information about your friends and how they relate to other members of your social graph. A Nexus GraphFor example, clicking on Richard, I discovered he shared commonalities with Jason Calacanis, Michael Arrington, and Robert Scoble. For the most part, these shared interests were in the form of groups that they both belonged to, but they also could be shared activities, music, movies, etc. (For example, both Richard and I are fans of the movie “The Matrix.”)Discovering common interestsYou can then click on any one of those shared commonalities and discover other members in your friend graph who also share this interest. You can even click a link to search all of Facebook to find people outside of your friend graph who are interested in the same thing. Another thing that Nexus can do is help you discover friends who are most similar to you. By clicking a provided link, the application compares your interests with those of your friends to determine who is most like you. Not to worry, though – the information gathered is restricted to the permissions you have on Facebook. If you were to share a friend’s page with someone who was not that person’s friend, all they would be able to see is the graph itself, not the common interests and how they relate to others.The graph generated by Nexus can be created as either a radial graph or a spring graph and can also be downloaded in one of three different sizes. German Grand Prix cut from 2015 Formula One calendar

first_imgThe German Grand Prix was cut from the 2015 Formula One calendar on Friday after neither of the country’s two circuits was able to make a deal with series promoter Bernie Ecclestone. The World Motor Sport Council said in a statement on Friday that the race was withdrawn because the commercial rights holder “and promoter did not reach agreement.”The German Grand Prix, one of the most historic in the calendar that was first held in 1926, had been set for July 19. The last time the German Grand Prix was scratched from the calendar was in 1955.With the two circuits alternating annually, Nuerburgring was scheduled to stage the race, but because it has financial problems, Hockenheim had been considered a replacement. The failure to reach a deal means there will now be 19 races this season instead of 20, with a three-week interval between the British Grand Prix on July 5 and the Hungarian race on July 26.The German race has been losing spectators steadily since the days of seven-time champion Michael Schumacher, even though Germany is home to Mercedes, the car maker behind the top team last season, and driver Nico Rosberg. Four-time champion Sebastian Vettel, who now drives for Ferrari, is also German.Nuerburgring circuit spokesman Pietro Nuvolini said earlier that there was still no agreement with Ecclestone while Hockenheim officials announced that the facility would be unable to organize the race within the time remaining.Nuerburgring officials had been asking Ecclestone to take a cut in his fee for staging the race. The fee is reportedly $15 million.
