5 reasons Auburn will win

first_imgAuburn’s offense has been sputtering, and its defense has been unable to stop anyone in the SEC over the past five games. But the past is the past, this is the Iron Bowl. The Tigers still have one of the best rushing offenses in the country and enough offensive playmakers to come away with a win tonight.1 The return of D’haquille Williams: Auburn’s passing game was aimless without Williams the past two-plus games, but he’s back and will present a major challenge to an Alabama secondary that’s been susceptible to big plays. He’ll also open things up for Sammie Coates.2 CAP lock: Cameron Artis-Payne, the SEC’s leading rusher, has been nearly unstoppable. Alabama was unable to stop Tre Mason a year ago, and CAP could do the same. Alabama has allowed three straight SEC opponents to top 100 yards rushing, and Artis-Payne could help make it four.3 Buckle-down defense: Despite all the uproar about Auburn’s defensive woes, one trait is still in favor of Ellis Johnson’s group: the red zone. Auburn is third nationally in red zone defense, allowing opponents to score just 68.89 percent of the time. In a short field, Auburn stands tall.4 Intangibles: Call it what you want. From whatever lingering effects there are from the Kick Six to Nick Marshall’s ability to deliver in the clutch, or just plain luck, Auburn has an edge. This has been a charmed team over the last two years, with the exception of the Texas A&M finish.5 Nothing to lose: Aside from a bit of pride and rivalry implications, Auburn really has very little to lose and can be aggressive. Alabama is vying for an SEC West crown, conference title and spot in the College Football Playoff. Auburn, at best, is looking for a 10-win season with a win in a New Year’s Six bowl.last_img read more
