If Kohli doesn’t score a 100 on this pitch, he should retire: Flat MCG fails to impress

first_img India Today Web Desk MelbourneDecember 26, 2018UPDATED: December 28, 2018 21:27 IST Virat Kohli was unbeaten on 47 at stumps on Day 1 of the Boxing Day Test at MCG (Reuters Photo)HIGHLIGHTSA docile MCG pitch on Day 1 at the Boxing Day Test has invited quite a lot of criticismICC had rated the wicket at the iconic venue in Melbourne poor after last year’s Boxing Day TestIndia managed 215 runs at 2.42 even as the MCG pitch offered little assistance to Australia pacersThe Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) pitch is under scrutiny once again. If the first day’s play of the ongoing Boxing Day Test between India and Australia is anything to go by, there will be more criticism over the nature of the wicket that the iconic venue has been offering in the recent past.Notably, there was nothing for the bowlers, including the pacers and the lone spinner, on the opening day as Australian bowling unit worked hard without many rewards at the MCG, which was rated “poor” by the International Cricket Council following a boring Boxing Day Ashes Test draw last year.India won the toss and opted to bat first despite a bit of grass covering at the MCG. In the lead up to the much-anticipated Boxing Day Test, all eyes were on the drop-in pitch as the ICC had rated a livelier wicket at the Perth Stadium used for the second Test “average”.However, the MCG pitch, as feared, turned out to be docile. Indian openers, Mayank Agarwal and Hanuma Vihari batted 18.5 overs together and made just 40. India managed only 215 runs at 2.42 despite losing only two wickets from 89 overs.Nathan Lyon was brought into the attack as early as in the eighth over – the earliest a spinner has bowled at the MCG since ball-by-ball records came into existence. Nonetheless, the Australian bowlers did a commendable job of keeping it tight despite not getting any real help from the wicket.Former Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson, who has played on a more lively wicket at the big G, expressed his disappointment by posting a photograph of a “road” during the first day’s play.advertisementHe even made a cheeky comment, saying India captain Virat Kohli, who is arguably the best Test batsman going around, should retire if he doesn’t end up scoring more than 100 on this MCG wicket.”No excuses, I’m not playing. If he doesn’t score 100-plus on this, he should retire,” Johnson wrote while replying to a fan’s comment.pic.twitter.com/JsakXFiRzEMitchell Johnson (@MitchJohnson398) December 26, 2018No excuses, I’m not playing. If he doesn’t score ?? plus on this, he should retire ??Mitchell Johnson (@MitchJohnson398) December 26, 2018Virat Kohli remained unbeaten on 47 (from 107) balls along with in-form Cheteshwar Pujara, who made 68 from 200 balls. The duo added 92 runs together and is expected to push India towards a huge first innings total on Thursday.Former England captain Michael Vaughan also slammed the MCG pitch. Several Australian journalists chipped in as well, saying they feared what ICC’s rating for the MCG pitch is going to be, this time around. The ICC rated the Perth Test Pitch Average … Give me that over the MCG pitch any day of the week !!!!!!! #AUSvINDMichael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) December 26, 2018After such a wonderful test match in Perth due to a lively wicket you would have thought MCG authorities would have learnt ..but no.Test cricket needs exciting fast bowling to survive. As a fan, there is nothing better to watch. So disappointing the pitch gave the bowlers nothing.NickMcCallum7 (@NickMcCallum7) December 26, 2018The @MCG pitch is why even cricket tragics turn it off and find something else to do. ??Why are we overly generous to touring teams? @cricketcomau @FoxCricketChris Smith (@chrissmithradio) December 26, 2018Nothing to be nervous about. Boxing Day test isn’t going anywhere but I agree the pitch is disappointingJulian de Stoop (@JDESTOOP80_FOX) December 26, 2018If the @ICC labelled the Perth pitch average’, I’d hate to know what this @MCG pitch is going to be rated.Shane McInnes (@shanemcinnes) December 26, 2018Crowds fine 73,000… pitch another story. ??Corey McKernan (@CoreyMcKernan) December 26, 2018Also Read | Boxing Day Test: Mayank Agarwal does not regret missing out on debut hundredAlso Read | Virat Kohli booed at MCG and made to wait at the crease after teaFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
